Baptism
Baptism or Thanksgiving?
As Christians we know the importance of Baptism, a point in life where you say, "I am going to live my life as a Christian", or "I am going to raise my child with Christian values", this is a wonderful statement to make, but not one which should be taken lightly.
“Baptism marks the beginning of a journey with God which continues for the rest of our lives, the first step in response to God’s love.
For all involved, particularly the candidates but also parents, godparents and sponsors, it is a joyful moment when we rejoice in what God has done for us in Christ, making serious promises and declaring the faith.
The wider community of the local church and friends welcome the new Christian, promising support and prayer for the future.
Hearing and doing these things provides an opportunity to remember our own baptism and reflect on the progress made on that journey, which is now to be shared with this new member of the Church.”
During the Baptism service, the Parents and the Godparents make specific promises to God that they will be responsible for the spiritual upbringing of the child. This extends beyond just simply saying a few words, or showing them how to make right choices in life, it means being responsible for laying strong Christian foundations from which the child can draw on throughout their life.
This may involve:
Praying for your child throughout the trials and tribulations of life, encouraging them to pray and rely upon God in their spiritual journey
Helping them to learn more about their Christian faith, through reading the their Bible with them, attending their church and praying
with them
Encouraging them to grow spiritually, ask and answer big questions about God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit
Provide them with an example of Christian living
Wow that's a lot!
If this seems like a lot, perhaps you would prefer a Thanksgiving service through which you give thanks to God for the arrival of your child, and ask his blessings upon your child and your lives as you seek to raise them.
